History

Having visited the lost city of the Incas – Machu Pichu and Cusco several times, I was impressed by the architecture, the buildings, Sacred Valley of the Incas, the people, their markets, communities, their beautiful children with cinnamon colour skin and their dark olives colour eyes, apple cheeks, but when I step out these areas, I strongly felt inside myself that I really needed to do something so that young children can have chances to learn.

The name Colibri, (humming bird) comes from the nicest memories at my parent's garden in Miraflores, Lima, where colibries come every morning to suck from the jasmine and other flowers. The nectar that colibries suck to feed themselves meant for me the funds that friends, organizations, institutions could donate to build kindergarten and provide food nutrients for children that needed it.

Who we are

Foundation Colibri, in the Netherlands, was founded in Amsterdam in 1987. The foundation aims to help the children in the marginal territory of Peru, with scare possibilities to develop as a normal child. The persons that integrate the foundation are Peruvian by birth and live in the Netherlands. There are four persons that integrate Stichting Colibri in Peru; two of them live in Lima and two live in Cusco.

Our legal name registered by the notary in Cusco, Peru is Association. The Association will be denominated COLIBRI - Jardines Infantiles - Cusco.

Brand

Association Colibrí in Peru in coordination with Stichting Colibri
Amsterdam, the Netherlands, thought to have sport clothing for
the children with our name Colibrí and the number of the kinder-
garden to make it easier for teachers, parents, and authorities to
identify the children in case they get lost. It will be easier to
bring them back to the area they belong.

The project

The project Colibri 2008-2009, is designated to attend children from 3 to 5 years old. We have the following goals for this year:

Construction of the kindergarten

We will assist 100 children from the community of Chimapahuaylla, district of San Jeronimo, Department of Cusco, Peru. We have the ground and the corresponding permission to build, which was given by the Regional Direction of Education from Cusco.
At the moment the Initial Educative Institution of Chimpahuaylla No 211, is attended by a teacher and students from the Superior Pedagogical Institute whom do their professional practices in this kindergarten. Actually it only counts with a small class, which is not big enough to be able to have a quantity of children that require education in this area. The teacher cannot have inscribed more children to assist to this small class. The teacher that gives lessons to the children in the IEI (Institucion Educativa Inicial) is competent and actualised with the innovations according to actual pedagogical improvements. The children are attended with love and dedication.
They are taught to love their community cultivating music, dance and ancestral customs. The mothers of the children do not have the financial possibilities to help to cover the basic school materials for the kindergarten either to help to build a kindergarten, that counts with the conditions to be able to attend more than 100 children from the area. It is necessary that we build a kindergarten. Later this building will be implemented with furniture and necessary learning materials.

The Medical Project

Designated to the care of Colibri’s children from IEI 419 Sipaspujio, IEI 215 Angostura and Chimpahauaylla, attending the necessity of meals and nutrition. For this project we count with the assistance of a paediatrician who will control the children prior and after their treatment. Advising the requirements for food and vitamins. We will make use of Quinua and Kiwicha cereals, with high nutritional contents to feed the underfeed children.

Workspace for the mothers

The kindergarten of Chimpahuaylla will have an annex workspace for the Colibri Children’s mothers where they will be capacitating, with courses as nutritious food, first aid, sawing, and knitting lessons, there will be computers and a library.

Kindergarten materials

We will help Colibri’s children buying school materials for their kindergarten year.

Children’s Christmas celebration

Association Colibri through our national and international benefactors will offer a Christmas breakfast for 250 children with chocolate milk, sweet breads, presents, colours and paper, as it has done years before with the kindergarten of Sipaspujio and Angostura, in 2007-2008 Chimpahuaylla was also included.

What we do and why

We seek for funds of any amount, that will make possible to build, implement a kindergarten or help an existing kindergarten with learning materials, a school board, a kitchen, or kitchen articles so that children can have their daily glass of milk, with a supplement if necessary Kiwicha or Quinua, which are cereals with enormous nutritious contents.
The Medical Project, is meant for the children that are underfeed, children that need special attention because they are entering the edge of illness, not being able to concentrate because of lack of food, vitamins, medicines, vaccinations.

We believe that every child has the right to grow in an environment, which is appropriate for his/her development with love and care and understanding. Our assistance must start at their early age so that they can go to their kindergarten, enjoy, learn ABC, play, and sing, dance and all related to what a child does at kindergarten. Another project, is the mother of the child, guiding her with practical knowledge on first aid, how to prepare nutritious meal with products from the area, integrate her in the responsibility of her child care, guide her with a variety of possibilities so that she can also learn and make a living.
Most of the mothers of these children go to the markets to sell their products. The average income of these mothers is approximately $2 or $3 dollars a day.

The possibilities

There are several ways you may assist these children, below some possibilities:

Children's Christmas celebration

You can buy a box of 48 tins of milk; it will cover a daily cup of milk nearly 96 to 100 children. There is no milk fabric in the city of Cusco, the milk is transported in cans from the city of Arequipa. The distance from Arequipa to Cusco is 635 kilometers, good for a 10 hour drive by car or even more by a cargo truck. From Lima to Cusco there is a distance of 975 kilometers. It is a 36 hour drive with a cargo truck through the Andes. The cost of a box of powder milk to cover 96 to 100 servings, is similar to the cost of milk in tins.

You may choose to help us to build and implement a kindergarten with any amount of money. The total costs of the construction of the new kindergarten of 299 mt has been calculated to Euro 55.900.
